Ambassador Lola Akande, the elder sister of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, stands as a shining example of dedicated public service, quiet leadership, and unwavering commitment to national development. Born into a close-knit family, Hon. Akande shares a strong bond with her younger sister, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, rooted in their upbringing in Ibadan. A proud alumna of Queen’s School, Ibadan, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Botany from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Lagos. Political and Legislative Leadership
Hon. Akande’s entry into politics was driven by a desire to serve her community. She represented Ikeja Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly (2007–2015), serving as Deputy Chief Whip (2007–2011) and later Deputy Majority Leader (2011–2015). Her legislative tenure was marked by integrity, effective representation, and a focus on practical issues affecting constituents.
In 2015, under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, she was appointed Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. In this role, she championed women’s empowerment through vocational training, provision of tools and equipment, cash support, and initiatives for child protection and poverty reduction. Many women and youths benefited from her programs, gaining skills for self-reliance. In 2019, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reappointed her as Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives, where she continued to promote MSMEs, indigenous products, and economic growth in Lagos.
Rise to Diplomatic Excellence
In March 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved her posting as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Sweden (Stockholm), a testament to her expertise, integrity, and proven track record. As an academic and policy expert with experience lecturing at institutions like Lagos State University and deep involvement in economic matters, she is well-positioned to strengthen bilateral ties. Her mandate focuses on enhancing trade, innovation partnerships, investment flows, and cultural exchanges between Nigeria and the Nordic region.
Beyond politics, Hon. Akande is a distinguished golfer and member of the Ladies’ Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN).
