The ANOH Gas Project (Assa North–Ohaji South Gas Project) is one of Nigeria’s largest natural gas development projects and a cornerstone of the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas Initiative.

Located in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, the project is designed to increase domestic gas supply, boost electricity generation, support industrial development, reduce gas flaring, and create jobs.

Processing Capacity

  • 300 million standard cubic feet (MMscf) of gas per day in Phase One.

Products

  • Lean (dry) natural gas

  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG/Cooking Gas)

  • Condensates

Purpose

The project is designed to supply natural gas to Nigeria’s domestic market for power generation, industries, and households while supporting the country’s transition to cleaner energy.

The ANOH Gas Project also serves as a strategic anchor for the Orashi Special Energy Free Trade Zone (OSEFTZ), a 140,000-hectare oil and gas free zone spanning Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta, Owerri West and Ngor Okpala Local Government Areas of Imo State. The Free Trade Zone is being developed as an international energy and industrial hub, leveraging gas from the ANOH Project and surrounding fields to attract investments in petrochemicals, fertilizer production, LNG, methanol, power generation, manufacturing, logistics, and export-oriented industries. Together, the ANOH Gas Project and the Orashi Special Energy Free Trade Zone position Imo State as one of Nigeria’s emerging energy, manufacturing, and investment destinations.

ANOH has made a commitment to collaborate with Orashi energy free trade zone to ensure that all its investors and partners have access to gas

Ownership Structure

The processing plant is operated by the ANOH Gas Processing Company (AGPC), a 50:50 joint venture between:

  • Seplat Energy Plc

  • Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), a subsidiary of NNPC Limited.

Major Milestones

  • 15 May 2024: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially commissioned the ANOH Gas Processing Plant in Ohaji, Imo State.

  • 16 January 2026: The project achieved First Gas, marking the commencement of commercial gas processing and supply following the completion of the export pipeline and regulatory approvals.

Current Operations

  • The plant has commenced the supply of processed gas to Indorama Petrochemical Company.

  • Initial production has ranged between 40–52 MMscf/day as operations continue to ramp up towards the plant’s installed capacity.

  • Condensate production has reached approximately 2,000–2,500 barrels of oil equivalent per day during the early operational phase.

Importance to Nigeria

The ANOH Gas Project is expected to:

  • Increase domestic gas availability.

  • Improve electricity generation through increased gas supply to power plants.

  • Support fertilizer, petrochemical, and manufacturing industries.

  • Increase LPG availability for cleaner cooking.

  • Reduce routine gas flaring.

  • Generate employment and stimulate economic activity across Imo State and Nigeria.

  • Advance Nigeria’s energy transition by replacing dirtier fuels with cleaner natural gas.

  • Provide reliable feedstock for the Orashi Special Energy Free Trade Zone, accelerating gas-based industrialisation, attracting foreign direct investment, and promoting export-led manufacturing in South-East Nigeria.

Benefits to Imo State

The project has already:

  • Created thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction.

  • Stimulated road, pipeline, and utility infrastructure development.

  • Increased opportunities for local contractors and host communities.

  • Expanded corporate social responsibility initiatives, including community development and security infrastructure.

  • Strengthened the foundation for the development of the Orashi Special Energy Free Trade Zone, positioning Imo State as a major hub for energy, petrochemicals, manufacturing, logistics, and regional trade while attracting significant domestic and international investment.
