President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across different ranks.
The new salary structure, which will take effect from September 1, 2026, is expected to benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel serving in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the salary review was designed to reward the commitment and sacrifices of members of the Armed Forces.
According to the statement, the salary adjustment was structured based on rank, with junior personnel receiving the highest percentage increase.
Under the approved package, officers above the rank of Colonel including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals, and Generals will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase in their salaries.
The highest adjustment will apply to personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant, who are set to receive an 80 per cent pay rise under the new remuneration structure.
The Presidency disclosed that the revised salary package will increase the annual wage bill for the Nigerian Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing a substantial investment in the welfare of military personnel.
According to Onanuga, the decision reflects President Tinubu's commitment to improving the welfare of members of the Armed Forces in recognition of their role in safeguarding the country.
He noted that military personnel continue to risk their lives in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats across different parts of Nigeria, making improved welfare a priority for the administration.
Commenting on the decision, President Tinubu said the salary increase was a demonstration of the government's appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices of the nation's servicemen and women.
"The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation," the President said.
The salary review is expected to boost morale among military personnel, many of whom have long advocated improved welfare amid ongoing security operations nationwide.
The announcement comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces through enhanced funding, improved equipment, and welfare initiatives aimed at supporting troops engaged in counter-insurgency and other internal security operations across the country.
